| With a Phillies holding a tight 1-0 lead in the top of the 9th, Jamie Moyer is scheduled to lead off the inning. Moyer had been smokin right along, holding the Astros to two hits through 8. I decided to let Moyer hit, and he walked! He later scores on Chase Utley's 3-run homerun to give the Phils a bit more breathing room. I let Moyer try for the shutout, he does allow a hit in the 9th and a doubleplay grounder ends the game for a 4-0 Phils win. With the three-hitter, Moyer becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to pitch a shutout at 47 years of age. The previous record holder was Phil Niekro, who pitched a shutout in 1986 at age 46. Moyer today also joins a select club, becoming the 8th pitcher in major league history to start a game in four different decades and one of 24 players overall to play a game in four different decades. He also becomes the 6th oldest pitcher overall to pitch in a game with today;s appearance. |
