April 19, 2010 Rays 9, Red Sox 7

In what may look like a low-scoring Bucs-Patriots game, the Red Sox suffer an embarassing collapse in the annual Patriots Day game. They had the longball going with all seven runs on homers with solo shots for Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez, along with a big 5 run 3rd inning with 2-run blast for Bill Hall and a 3-run smash for Big Papi. John Lackey was far from sharp, but just managed to hang on for 5 innings in line for the win. That is, until the 8th inning.

Daniel Bard is wild as hell, hitting a batter and walking two to load the bases. Now, with the bases loaded, no outs and a 7-5 lead I bring in Papelbon, but he sufers his 3rd blown save of the season when Carl Crawford gets a single for an RBI and Evan Longoria rips one to left to score another run with the throw home by Jeremy Hermedia going wide enabling another run to score. Another run scored for the Rays in the 9th. The Sox go down quietly against Rafael Soriano, unable to answer the four run outburst, and 9-7 is the final.

That gives Tampa a 2-0 record now in Patriots Day games, with their other win coming in their second season of 1999 back when they still had the Devil in them. I found something that I copied and pasted that has the Red Sox's all time record in Patriots Day games (66-48), along with the most recent game's date against each team. There have actually been 114 games on Patriots Day, with a lot of doubleheaders in the early days. I didn't have to change the record for the Rays, since the Sox lost the game IRL too. They have played every AL team at least once (including the Milwaukee Brewers when they were still in the AL), including 20 games against each of the former Philadelphia A's and Washington Senators. Those 20 for each of them, along with the 33 against the Yankees are the most against any team. They have only played the Twins, Angels, Mariners, Royals and Oakland A's once each, and the Twins last in 1976, Tigers in 1986 and Royals in 1987.

New York Yankees 22-11 4/19/04

WEB GEMS- Top 6th: Dustin Pedroia robbed Carl Crawford of a base hit.

Rafael Soriano was great in relief and Carl Crawford left the yard and had 4
RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 7.

The Boston fans didn't appreciate the big day Crawford had. He popped a
two-run clout over the fence in the 1st inning, ripped a base-hit knocking in
a run in the 8th inning and laced a single bringing in a run in the 9th
inning. Soriano was perfect in the ninth giving him his 2nd save on the
season.

Mike Ekstrom(1-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Daniel
Bard(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was unable to retire a batter
and surrendered no hits and 2 walks.

The Tampa Bay ballclub's record now stands at 7-6. Boston has a record of
4-9, worst in the division after the loss.
