| Jon Lester sets a career high (sort of) with 13 strikeouts as the Sox take two of three north of the border. Back-to-back homeruns in the first inning by Victor Martinez and Kevin Youkilis set the tone, with V-Mart adding his second homerun of the game in the 3rd inning along with a 3-run blast for Jason Varitek. The game wasn't as close as the score makes it appear, as all 5 Jays runs came on two big hits - a 3-run jack for Jose Bautista off of Lester and a 2-run long ball for Aaron Hill off Manny Declarmen. Paps takes the final batter after Hill's homer in a non-save situation to try to get some action, this being only his second appearance in a week. As I said, the 13 strikeouts sort of sets a new high for Lester. His high for strikeouts in real life is 13, which he did on July 24 of 2010. But, this being SOM play and since that date hasn't even occured yet anyway, today's 13 K's will be considered a new career high. |

Jon Lester dominated striking out 13 Toronto batters and Victor Martinez
launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Rogers Centre as the Boston Red Sox beat
the Toronto Blue Jays 8 to 5.
Martinez had a good evening at the plate. He clubbed a solo home run in the
1st inning and cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd inning. For the game Boston
out-hit Toronto 10 to 7.
Lester(2-3) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Brett Cecil(0-2) was
hit with the loss. He served up 4 gopher balls in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Lester was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd
when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running
tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange -
but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
