June 16, 2010 Phillies 4, Yankees 2 (10)

It takes extra frames, but the Phillies come out on top when Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each hit RBI doubles in the top of the 10th. Brad Lidge, who took the mound in the 9th to squelch a Yanks rally attempt in a tie game, gets the win and saves his own win when he takes the bottom of the 10th. No save in the record books though, obviously.

In a good matchup it was the Philadelphia Phillies 4, the New York (AL)
Yankees 2 in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Philadelphia was
victorious in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Chase Utley began
the Philadelphia spurt when he stroked a one-base hit. Ryan Howard came next
and he doubled. Chan Ho Park then threw a wild pitch. One out later, Raul
Ibanez came to the plate and doubled. Ben Francisco came up to bat and was
walked intentionally. Overall Philadelphia out-hit New York (AL) 12 to 7.

Brad Lidge(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Park(1-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 3
hits in 2 innings.

The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 35-28. With the loss, New
York (AL) has a record of 7-3 lately, 43-22 overall.

June 16, 2010 Red Sox 8, Diamondbacks 4

Given some runs to finally work with, Jon Lester's sloppy start nonetheless goes into the win collumn. Lester was basically out of the game already when he got the win. After Arizona had batted in the top of the 6th I had already decided to have a new pitcher for the top of the 7th, and in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-2 tie Bill Hall slams a nice 3-run pinch-hit homerun of of Blaine Boyer to put the Sox over the hump.

Boyer gets the loss with five runs allowed on only one hit. How can that happen? Four walks, that's how. The free-swinging Snakes strike out 14 times against the Red Sox pitching. Just to show how much Arizona strikes out compared to everyone else, their team total of 639 is almost 60 more than the second highest, and is over 100 more than the highest total in the AL.

June 15, 2010 Yankees 4, Phillies 0

In 1950, the Phillie "Whiz Kids" were swept by the New York Yankees in the World Series, four games to none. By the looks of today's score, their luck isn't any better sixty years later. The defending pennant winners do battle in the interleague play, and C. C. Sabitha ties a career high with 13 strikeouts while Nick Swisher knocks out two homeruns as the Yanks dispatch the Phillies in the shutout. Sabitha's replacement, Boone Logan, strikes out four of his own for a total of 17 strikeouts. That would be the most against the Phillies in a nine inning game in almost 20 years, since 19 Phillies struck out against David Cone on the final day of the season back in 1991.

That 1950 World Series appearance would be the only one for the Phillies in a 65 year stretch between 1915 and 1980, but you probably knew that already.

C.C. Sabathia reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts and Nick Swisher rocketed 2
homeruns and scored 3 times as the New York (AL) Yankees outscored the
Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 0.

It was a good day for New York (AL) thanks to Swisher. He slapped a one-base
hit in the 2nd inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 8th inning. New York (AL) finished
with 9 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 6.

Sabathia(10-2) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Boone
Logan recorded the save, his 1st. Roy Halladay(4-7) took the loss. He gave
up 3 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Sabathia offered, 'The
fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of
course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

June 15, 2010 Diamondbacks 11, Red Sox 1

Interleague play continues with Arizona making a trip east to Fenway, and they have no problem with jet lag and dispatch the Red Sox with ease. The wrong Drew had the good game today, with Stephen Drew of Arizona going 4 for 5 while older brother J. D. from the Sox gets only one hit. A third Drew also played in the majors, middle brother Tim who pitched 85 innings for three teams over five years including two seasons with the Expos in 2002 and 2003.

June 13, 2010 Red Sox 8, Phillies 3

Look at the hits and the Phillies outhit the Sox 11-9, including two homeruns for Ryan Howard. But more than hits win games as the 13 walks given up by Phillie pitchers, including a career high 6 for starter Cole Hamels, give the Sox plenty of baserunners and Boston takes the rubber game of the series. Those 13 walks are one shy of the Phillies all-time record for walks given up in one nine-inning game of 14 which occured in 1948, 1959 and 2003.

Dustin Hermanson throws his first pitch in the major leagues, which is grabbed by Chase Utley and deposited into the outfield seats for a 2-run homerun (the only Phillie runs of the game), while left fielder Daniel Nava scores a run and gets an RBI without benefit of a hit in his debut. A tight 2-2 game was busted open by the Red Sox in the bottom of the 7th when the Phillies pitching just fell apart:

June 11, 2010 Phillies 15, Red Sox 8

Like I did with the first Sox/Phils series this season I but the road team to the computer manager, in this case the Phillies. It didn't matter who the manager was today as they slam out 18 hits and 15 runs, with Sox starter John Lackey still sucking as you can see. A bright note for the Red Sox though - Adrian Beltre smokes two over the fence and Victor Martinez gets a solo shot. 17 of the 18 starters in the lineup for both teams combined had at least one hit, the only one shut out was the 0 for 4 Mike Lowell.

Dan Uggla rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Florida Marlins topped the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 1 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Uggla was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park
in the 2nd inning, ripped a base-knock in the 4th inning and bombed a two-run
dinger in the 8th inning. Florida finished with 11 hits while Philadelphia
ended up with 7.

The win went to Josh Johnson(7-6) who allowed 1 run in 6 and 2/3 innings. Leo
Nunez gained credit for his 10th save. The loss was charged to Roy
Halladay(4-6).

Jon Lester sails through the first six innings, but becomes unglued in the 7th getting the loss in a game that he actually deserved to lose. Lester was far from sharp today with four walks, two hit batters, a wild pitch, and four runs allowed. His replacement, Daniel Bard, was also about as sharp as a dull pencil allowing three runs, walking two (one intentional) and hitting a batter with the bases loaded, all in not even a full inning. Talk about a painful RBI!!

hits in their victory.

The losing pitcher was Jon Lester(4-8). He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and

June 9, 2010 Red Sox 8, Indians 5

The youngsters and former teammates do battle today and in real life, Justin Masterson pitched his first professional shutout in this game against the Sox with a two hitter. Not today, as his former team gives it to him as he drops to 2-8 with the second most losses in the majors. A late Indians rally closes the gap a bit, but with a 6-0 lead the Sox easily prevail.

June 8, 2010 Pirates 1, Nationals 0

Just thought I would show you this one. Stephen Strasburg takes it on the chin in his major league debut, taking a tough-luck 1-0 loss to the Pirates while only allowing three hits and striking out 12. The one run, and the one pitch Strasburg wants back, was a solo homerun for Delwyn Young in the 2nd inning.

emerged as victors over the Washington Nationals by the score of 1 to

was all the run support Karstens required. Joel Hanrahan was great in relief

June 8, 2010 Red Sox 12, Indians 9

Trailing 5-1 entering the 8th inning, the Red Sox explode for 9 runs in their half of the 8th as the game becomes a slugfest from that point on. Dustin Pedroia knocks in four runs, and three RBI for Mike Cameron. It all takes Tim Wakefield off the hook and the win goes to Boof Bosner in his Red Sox debut, despite Bosner's sloppy performance. Everybody had a hit for the Sox except for Darnell McDonalds (but he did score twice in that 9 run 8th inning).
