June 30, 2010 Phillies 2, Reds 0

In a very quick 2:23, Roy Halladay finally pitches more like he should, dispatching the Reds with ease on the 5-hitter striking out 12 as the Phils salvage a game out of the series. Aaron Harang was no slouch for Cincinnati, but Halladay could not be beated today. It all gives Harang his 11th loss of the season, second most in the majors.

The most losses goes to Paul Maholm of the Pirates, with the Terry Felton-esque record of 1-12. He already has Felton beat just by winning a game, as Felton was 0-13 in 1982. But Maholm might have a shot at coming close to Anthony Young, who was 2-14 for the Mets in 1992 and then topped that off with a 1-16 mark in 1993 for a combined total of 3-30!!

June 29, 2010 Rays 14, Red Sox 5

No chance at all for the Sox today, as after a quick 2-1 lead after the first inning Tampa scores 13 unanswered runs in the slaughter. Sean Rodriguez rips 2 homeruns and 6 RBI and Carl Crawford goes 4 for 5 while scoring four times as Tampa scored in every inning but the 8th. Meanshile, starter James Shields sets career highs in both walks and strikeouts while throwing 148 pitches!

batters as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 14
to 5 at Fenway Park.

Rodriguez enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lofted a three-run bomb in
the 3rd inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 6th inning. The Tampa Bay
offense smacked the Boston pitching staff around, scoring in 7 of the 9
innings.

Shields(6-5) got the win allowing 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. John
Lackey(5-6) was the losing pitcher. Tampa Bay knocked him around a bit, as
he gave up 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

'Everything felt great' Shields said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody tonight.'

June 29, 2010 Reds 5, Phillies 4 (12)

After Johnny Cueto and Mike "Take A" Leake hold the Phillies to only one hit through 15 innings, Ryan Howard chops a 3-0 Reds lead by one with a 7th inning solo homerun. The little man then comes up big for the Phillies, as Dane Sardinha rips his first major league homerun at a good time as a 2-run shot in the top of the 8th off of Francisco Cordero ties the score.

An intentional walk to Raul Ibanez to load the bases backfires on the Reds in the 11th when Juan Castro pokes a base hit to give the Phils the 4-3 lead. That lead is evasporated when Scott Rolen leads off the Reds 11th with a solo homerun off of Brad Lidge as Lidge joins Cordero in the blown save club, and after Cole Hamels pinch-hits for Lidge in the 12th (the bench was empty, and Hamels is batting .286), Danys Baez turns into the goat when Joey Votto goes deep with two out in the 12th for the walk-off homerun for Cincy.

Dane Sardinha joins teammate Shane Victorino as one of the few natives of Hawaii to play in the big leagues. There have been a total of 37 Hawaiian natives in the bigs, but I would doubt any have played together until now.

allowing no runs. Danys Baez(0-2) took the loss in relief.

With this win, Cincinnati has a division leading 50-28 record. They have been

I had blogged the game normally, but didn't go through and I had to blog this one as youi will see.

Johnny Cueto had better buy teammate Jay Bruce a beer after today. A spectacular catch by Bruce in the 4th robs Chase Utley of a homerun, which was the closest that the Phillies came to scoring. That was also the closest hit, as Cueto gets the no-hitter! Looking at the box score and seeing no hits, runs, walks or runners left on base for the Phils you may ask how is that not a perfect game?

This is how - Cueto blows it himself whan he hits Jayson Werth with a pitch in the 8th inning after retiring the first 22 batters straight. Not unfazed a bit though, he gets next batter Raul Ibanez to ground into a doubleplay to end the inning and goes a spotless 9th. Must be agonizing as hell knowing how close he came to a perfect game.

Johnny Cueto(6-0) was on top of his game in Cincinnati as he tossed a beauty
of a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cincinnati Reds won by
a score of 3 to 0.

Cueto gave the home town fans an evening that they'll never forget. He did
not even surrender a walk. The tension built to a fever pitch. After the
8th inning everybody in the ballpark was anticipating what would happen in
the 9th. Cincinnati rapped out 9 hits for the night.

Kyle Kendrick(6-4) was charged with the loss. When asked how his stuff was
out there, Cueto looked a bit incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied
'A bit better than average, I'd have to say'

Johnny Cueto of the Reds is some happy, as he joins John Johnson and Ervin Santana as members of the no-hit club for 2010. Sucks that it was against the Phillies though. What is most agonizing (for Cueto anyway) is just how close he came to a perfect game.

Looking at the box score, you see that the Phillies had no runs, no hits, no walks and nobody left on base. That makes you think now how did Cueto not get a perfect game? With one out in the 8th inning, he hit Jayson Werth with a pitch after retiring the first 22 batters in a row. Perfect game is gone, but Raul Ibanez can't capitalize and grounds into an inning ending doubleplay erasing the runner. A perfect 9th gives Cueto the no-hitter, and puts him to 6-0 on the season, but how disappointed he must be with just how close to a perfect game he came.

History was made in Cincinnati as Johnny Cueto(6-0) tossed a no-hitter and the
Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to
0.

The partisan crowd cheered every Philadelphia out from the 7th inning on. He
did not even surrender a walk. The Cincinnati players and coaches started to
leave Cueto alone with his thoughts after the game reached the 7th inning.
By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a pin drop every
time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every out. Cincinnati
banged out 9 hits on the night.

Kyle Kendrick(6-4) absorbed the loss. What a show!' Dusty Baker said. 'Cueto
was great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

June 27, 2010 Phillies 2, Blue Jays 1

No Tommy John surgery yet at this point for Jamie Moyer, but he shows some left holding the Jays to no earned runs for the game. Danyz Baez and Brad Lidge take the final 1 2/3, with Lidge getting the save. The opponent today, Brett Cecil, was born in the same year that Moyer was a rookie with the Cubs (1986). Nothing like beating a pitcher who could literrally be your son!

Jamie Moyer went 6 and two third strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2 to 1 at Rogers Centre.

Moyer(4-5) was solid in the win. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and 1 walk
in 6 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 4.73 to 4.36. Philadelphia had
only 4 hits for the game.

Brad Lidge earned the save, his 5th. Brett Cecil(3-7) was hit with the loss.
He gave up just 2 runs and 3 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

June 27, 2010 Red Sox 7, Giants 4

A 1-0 Giants lead after 7 full innings turns into a wild one with most of the scoring in the 8th inning. The Sox half of the 8th is capped with a 2-run triple for Kevin Youkilis and a 3-run homer for Marco Scutaro. Manny Declarmen allows the Giants 3 back in the bottom of the innings, but Paps takes the uneventful 9th for his 13th save.

With the two starters today (Jon Lester and Tim Linecum) having a combined record of 8-15, this kind of final might be expected but the two also have a combined ERA of 3.33. Lester finally gets blessed with some support, but was out of the game (having been pinch-hit for in the top of the 7th) by the time the action started and gets a no-decision.

Marco Scutaro cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox bested the
San Francisco Giants 7 to 4 at AT&T Park.

Boston came up with all the runs they needed in the 8th inning as they erupted
for 7 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Scutaro who deflated the crowd
as he lost the ball over the fence for three runs. Boston totaled 7 hits on
the afternoon.

The win went to Daniel Bard(2-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Jonathan
Papelbon gained credit for his 13th save. The loss was charged to Brian
Wilson(0-4) in relief. He gave up 1 hit and 3 walks in 1/3 of an inning.

June 26, 2010 Blue Jays 4, Phillies 3

Cole Hamels held the power-laden Blue Jays at bay for the first six innings with teammates Ross Gload and Ryan Howard flexing the muscles for a 3-0 lead, but Juan Bautista and Vernon Wells go back-to-back to lead off the 7th. Two more Jays cross the plate in the inning, and it all spells doom for the Phillies in the semi-annual 1993 World Series rematch.

Catcher Victor Martinez blasted a homerun and had 6 RBI as the Boston Red Sox
bested the San Francisco Giants 11 to 3 at AT&T Park.

Martinez had a big day with his bat. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 1st inning, singled bringing in a run in the 8th inning
and doubled with all three baserunners touching home in the 9th inning.
Boston had 13 hits for the afternoon.

Clay Buchholz(7-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 1 run. Madison Bumgarner(0-1) was hit with the loss. 'It's almost
like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Martinez said. 'Whenever I would
swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

June 26, 2010 Red Sox 11, Giants 3

After a long, long respite from SOM play (a bit more than four months) I get back on track today and so do the Sox as they begin their final interleague series of the year. After losing their last five games they pour it on, knocking rookie Madison Bumgarner out of the game in the first inning. Victor Martinez knocks home six teammates and Bill Hall sends two solo shots downtown in the 11-3 slaughter.

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Buster Posey blocked the plate, saving a run!
