| Three hits account for all seven runs scored by the Sox today. Two of the biggest, a 3-run blast for David Ortiz in the 3rd and a nice 3-run pinch-hit homer in the 7th for Adrian Beltre give the Sox a 6-3 lead, which is wasted away when the Rays get a run in the 8th and B. J. Upton rips a 2-run shot in the top of the 9th off of Paps for a 6-all tie. The Sox come through in the end though when the biggest hit of all comes off the bat of J. D. Drew, as he takes Rhode Island native Dan Wheeler deep to lead off the 10th inning for the walk-off homer and a thrilling victory. Fifteen batters left on base for Tampa today, easy to tell when they get 11 hits and walk 11 times but only put 6 runs scross the plate. If you are curious, the Red Sox were involved in the game with the major league record (for a 9 inning game) of 20 LOB, which the Yankees did against the Sox in a game back in 1956. That game featured the Red Sox giving up 15 hits, 9 walks and making 5 errors in a 13-7 win! Talk about lack of clutch hitting... |
