May 17, 2010 Phillies 8, Pirates 7

At one time, the Phillies and Pirates had one of the most heated rivalries in baseball - being from the same state, the same division, perennial contenders. With the advent of realignment back in 1994 that created the NL Central and placed the Pirates in that division, that slowed the rivalry a bit and since 2000 the two teams have never played each other more than six times in one season (home and home series for each team). Today's game brought back some of that old time rivalry.

A 4 for 5 (triple shy of cycle), 2 HR, 3 RBI and 3 run scored day for Pirate leadoff man Delwyn Young set the tone for them when he led off the game with a homerun, but that would be the only time the Phillies trailed. They get two back in their half of the first inning when Jimmy Rollins, back off the DL, goes to the plate for the first time in over a month and rips one over the wall for his first homerun of the year. The Phils never trail again, although Pittsburgh did make a game of it.

Carlos Ruiz had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8 to 7 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Kyle Kendrick(3-2) pitched just well enough, barely, to win. He gave up 5
runs, 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Chad Durbin gained credit for his 2nd save. Charlie Morton(2-4) suffered the
loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 4 innings of work.

John Russell was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

May 17, 2010 Red Sox 6, Yankees 2

The first game of the year in The Bronx goes into the win collumn as 2-run homeruns by Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz lead he charge. Daisuke Matsuzaka has the typical Dice-Kish start, allowing 10 hits but only 2 runs while striking out 10 in getting the win. With the save situation negated by the 2-run Papi 8th inning homer, Scott Schoenweis takes the 9th and does allow the tying run to get to the on deck circle, but that is as close as the Yankees get.

Matsuzaka(2-1) had a solid outing for Boston. He went 6 innings and surrended

ended up with more runs.

Phil Hughes(4-3) was the losing pitcher. Matsuzaka was humble when questioned

But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That
was an extremely well called game!'

May 16, 2010 Phillies 2, Brewers 0

Cole Hamels comes through on the mound and at the plate, ripping a 2-run double to account for both runs and tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings while whiffing 12 and improves to 6-1 on the year. Placido Polanco gets three hits for the Phils, and Corey "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" Hart gets two of the four hits for the Brewers. Good thing the Phillies only actually needed one run to win the game, they left 15 runners on base!

May 16, 2010 Red Sox 8, Tigers 5

Three players seemed to eat a full bowl of Wheaties for breakfast - Jason Varitek, Miguel Cabrera (spiked Wheaties in his case) and John Lackey. Tek rips a grand slam as part of a 6 run 3rd inning which knocks Tigers starter Armando Galarraga from the game, the lush Cabrera accounts for all five Tiger runs with two homeruns off of Lackey, and as for Lackey despite the subpar start gets his first win since his first start of the season and comes close to tying a record.

Lackey struck out the side in both the first and second innings for six straight strikeouts to begin he game, two off the major league record and one shy of the AL record. The AL record is the first seven batters done by the immortal Joe Cowley for the White Sox against the Rangers on May 28, 1986, while the major league record is by another recognizable name from the 1980s, Jim Deshaies, who struck out the first eight Dodgers while pitching for Houston on September 23, 1986.

I say the immortal Joe Cowley because as I am sure you remember he had possibly the worst no-hitter in history when he walked seven batters and allowed a run against the Angels on September 19 of 1986, almost four months after he set the seven straight at beginning of game strikeout record mentioned above. Four days after Cowley's no-hitter, Deshaies broke the record with eight straight strikeouts to begin the game. Two days later on the 25th, Mike Scott pitched a no-hitter to clinch the division for the Astros to cap off a very interesting week of baseball.

run in the game.

May 15, 2010 Angels 1, Athletics 0 (Ervin Santana no-hitter)

Ervin Santana holds the Oakland A's hitless for the first no-hitter in the American League this year and the second in the majors as Santana joins Josh Johnson of the Marlins in the no-no club, exactly one month after Johnson's no-hitter on April 15th against the Reds. Four walks kept Santana from perfection. A bit of added info:

This will be the 7th solo no-hitter in Angels history and the first one in over 25 years, since Mike Witt tossed a perfect game against the Texas Rangers on the final day of the 1984 season. The last solo no-hitter against the A's was by Nolan Ryan of the Rangers on June 11, 1990. Speaking of Nolan Ryan he owns four of those seven Angel no-hitters, throwing his first one exactly 37 years ago on this date back on May 15th of 1973.

I say solo no-hitter because there have been combined no-hitters for the Angels and against the A's more recently than previously mentioned. Mark Langston went the first seven and previous perfect game man Witt took the final two innings as they combined for the Angels to no-hit Seattle in 1990 and four Oriole pitchers combined to no-hit Oakland in 1991.

This isn't the first time a no-hitter has involved the Angels and Athletics. Clyde Wright tossed a no-no against the A's for teh first Angels no-hitter back in 1970. Four Oakland pitchers combined to no-hit the Angels on the final day of the 1975 season, which was the only other no-hitter besides Witt's perfect game in 1984 to be on the final day of the season.

History was made in Los Angeles(AL) as Ervin Santana(4-2) tossed a no-hitter
and the Los Angeles(AL) Angels defeated the struggling Oakland Athletics by
the score of 1 to 0.

Santana was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Oakland batters
down like so many dominoes. He walked 4 Oakland batters. The tension was
mounting with every inning after the 6th. Santana appeared oblivious himself
to the mounting history until two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he
allow himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound. Los
Angeles(AL) managed 7 hits in their victory.

Craig Breslow(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. 'Santana pitched one
heck of a game!' Mike Scioscia said. 'He didn't get away with any bad
pitches because he just didn't throw any bad pitches. What a performance!'

May 15, 2010 Tigers 5, Red Sox 4

Marco Scutaro and Victor Martinez team up to knock home three runners in the 7th inning, but unfortunately for the Sox it wasa bit too late. For the first 5 2/3 innings of the game Jon Lester was smoking along only allowing one hit while striking out eight, but unexplicably collapses with two outs in the 5th unable to record that final out while the Tigers explode for five runs in the inning with the big blast being a 3-run bomb for Magglio Ordonez. That would be the only inning Detroit scored in, but it is enough.

Boston Red Sox 5 to 4 at Comerica Park.

Detroit did all of it's offensive work in the 6th inning scoring 5 runners on
6 hits. The big moment was provided by Miguel Cabrera who excited the crowd
when he rifled a three-run blast. Jose Valverde was perfect in the ninth
giving him his 5th save on the season.

Fu-Te Ni(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Jon Lester(3-5) was the losing pitcher. Despite the loss,
he struckout 8 Detroit batters in 5 and 2/3 innings.

May 14, 2010 Brewers 5, Phillies 2

In the battle of former teammates, Jamie Moyer and Randy Wolf, three homeruns for Milwaukee send them to the win. The Phils try to make some noise in the 9th getting the first two runners on and the tying run to the plate, but can't poke anybody across home. Despite two triples for Shane Victorino and a triple for Chace Utley, both Phillie RBIs came off the bat of Ryan Howard, who oddly enough went 0 for 4! Howard twice knocked home a runner from third base with a groundout to account for both Phillie runs.

moment was provided by George Kottaras who made the crowd come alive when he

Randy Wolf(5-2) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Detroit does make some noise in the 9th though with Miguel Cabrera punching one over the wall off of the continuing to struggle Manny Declarmen good for two runs, so now with a three run lead Paps comes in for the unexpected save and retires three straight for save number 5.

May 12, 2010 Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

The Sox again have a bit of trouble making contact, as Jays starter Shaun Marcum whiffs 10 for his third career double digit strikeout game. A tight 0-0 battle with Tim Wakefield the first four innings goes the Jays way when Lyle Overbay belts his league-leading 12th homerun over the wall in the 5th, and Toronto holds the lead the remainder of the game. The Sox do make some noise in the 9th by scoring a run and getting the winning run to the plate, but Marco Scutaro grounds out to end the game with two runners left on base. Plenty of web gems, as you can see!

Shaun Marcum mowed down 10 Boston batters and Lyle Overbay lofted one into the
'cheap seats' at Fenway Park as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox
4 to 2.

Marcum(3-3) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 5 hits and
2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Boston made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.

Marcum got help from Kevin Gregg who was credited with his 7th save. Tim
Wakefield(2-3) took the loss. Marcum, when asked about his 10 strikeout
performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we
lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it
feels great!'

May 12, 2010 Phillies 10, Rockies 2

Big days for Carlos Ruiz, who ties a career high with four hits, and three-hit days for Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard fuel a 17-hit attack as the Phillies have no problem dispatching the Rockies in the light air of Colorado. Roy Halladay even helps his own cause by driving in the first two runs of the game with a 4th inning single.

For the Phillies, this marks their 7th straight win and puts them only a game and a half out of first place in the East behind the tied for first Braves and Mets.

One run was the difference at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox halted a 5
game slide and defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4 to 3.

Boston promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they came up
with 2 runs on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Kevin Youkilis who
brought a roar from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he smashed a two-run
homer. Toronto threatened in the 9th but Boston was able to put down the
rally.

Daisuke Matsuzaka(1-1) went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win.
Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 4th. Dana Eveland(1-4) absorbed the
loss. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings.

Terry Francona was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of
games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can
relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'

May 10, 2010 Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 4

You can't win a game without making contact with the ball, as Marco Scutaro sets a career high with four strikeouts at the plate and teammate David Ortiz joins Scutaro in the silver sombrero club with four whiffs of his own to tie his career high. Overall the Sox strike out 16 times against four Toronto pitchers, including all five outs recorded by stopper Kevin Gregg via K. It all adds up to a season high fifth straight loss for the Sox. This game will mark only the third time since 1997 that the Red Sox batters have struck out at least 16 times in a game.

5th inning plating an isolated run on 3 base hits. Overall Toronto out-hit
Boston 14 to 6.

was credited with his 6th save. John Lackey(1-2) was tagged with the loss.

May 10, 2010 Phillies 6. Rockies 5

The Phillies look to get all of the runs they need in the first inning, scoring five times and knocking Rockies starter Greg Smith from the game after only 2/3 of an inning and had the lead throughout. But it is an unearned run in the top of the 9th that proves to be the deciding run, as Brad Lidge allows a 2-run homerun to Seth Smith (no relation to Greg Smith) for what would have been the tying run if not for that 9th inning run. A sloppy save for Lidge, but still his first save of the year.

Also a rarity - a triple play! After a walk to Jason Giambi and a single by Melvin Mora puts Giambi at third, Ian Stewart lines one to Chase Utley for the out. Utley zips a throw to third baseman Placido Polanco to double Giambi off of third for out number two, and Polanco throws across the diamond to Ryan Howard who catches Mora before he can get back to the bag at first base to complete the triple play.

Bot 6th: Philadelphia turns a triple play!

Jayson Werth had 2 base hits as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Colorado
Rockies by a score of 6 to 5 at Coors Field.

Colorado fell behind quickly as the Philadelphia offense came through in the
first inning when they scored 5 runs on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was
provided by Wilson Valdez who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he
delivered a single which was good for two runs. Philadelphia had 14 hits for
the night while Colorado had 10.

The win went to Kyle Kendrick(2-2) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Brad Lidge was credited with his 1st save. Greg Smith(1-4) was hit with the
loss.

'He gutted it out' Charlie Manuel said of Kendrick. 'I was very impressed by
his tenacity.'
