June 23, 2010 Rockies 8, Red Sox 2

David Ortiz gets a start at first base due to playing in the NL park and performed flawlessly in the field, but an 0 for 4 day at the plate didn't help. He did get an RBI though as did Dustin Pedroia, who homers for the second straight day. Those would be the only Sox highlights as the Rockies tee off in that light Colorado air for 4 homeruns. John Lackey still proves the adage that "John Lackey sucks!", allowing three of those Rockies homers and 7 runs in 4 1/3 innings in absorbing the loss as the Red Sox lose their 4th straight game.

Right fielder Brad Hawpe hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI and Ubaldo
Jimenez had a strong outing as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Boston Red
Sox by the score of 8 to 2 at Coors Field.

Colorado took the lead for good in the 2nd inning when they came up with 3
runs on 3 hits. That was all the runs Jimenez(7-4) needed. Colorado rapped
out 12 hits for the night.

John Lackey(5-5) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 7 runs in 4 and 1/3
innings and saw his ERA increase from 4.62 to 5.09.

When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Lackey was lavish in his
praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long
night. Jimenez brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was
able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the
entire game!

June 22, 2010 Phillies 10, Indians 8

A faux paus on my part lead me to having an outfielder play catcher for the Phillies for the final two innings! Let me explain:

With regular catcher Carlos Ruiz jusat going onto the DL, Brian Schneider is handling the majority of the backstop work. His backup would be Dane Sardinha (one of the few native Hawaiians in the majors, the most well known being teammate Shane Victorino). Sardinha pinch-hit for pitcher Jamie Moyer in the 5th inning for his Phillie debut. Trying to get a rally going in the 7th and totally forgetting that backup catcher Sardinha had already been in the game, Ben Francisco came in to pinch-hit for the light hitting Schneider, which works as he ignites a 5 run game winning rally with a bases loaded double for three runs. Only problem is, and I didn' teven realize it until it happened, for the top of the 8th I have no catchers on the roster now! For lack of anyone else Francisco takes over behind the plate, gets through the 8th okay, but gets a passed ball during a 3-run Indians rally in the 9th.

Despite the Indians being one of the charter members of the American League in 1901 and the Phillies being the longest one city, one team name team in professional sports (since 1883), this is the first time Cleveland has ever played in Philadelphia to play the Phillies. The two previous Indians-Phillies interleague matchups in 2002 and 2007 were both in Cleveland. Obviously the Indians have played in Philly before the A's moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City in 1954.

He allowed only 2 hits and no walks in 2 innings. Cleveland had a chance in

Mitch Talbot(6-6) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and
5 walks in 6 innings.

UJune 22, 2010 Rockies 5, Red Sox 3

After falling down 5-0 against the Rockies, the Sox use Denver's light air to their advantage with solo homeruns for Adrian Beltre and Dustin Pedroia to crawl within three. They load the bases in the 9th against Manny Corpas with no out, then Huston Street takes over. No crossing that Street for the Sox, as pinch-hitter Jason Varitek strikes out, Marco Scutaro does get a sac fly for a run but out number two, and Pedroia ends it with a lineout.

Still getting no support from teammates, Jon Lester gets saddled with his 9th loss of the year which ties his real-life total for the entire season, although this time the five runs allowed in four innings is his shortest start of the year. Lester did do one thing right though - he got a double in his only plate appearance for the first hit of his career.

plate and drew a walk. Clint Barmes then smacked a single to load the bases.
Jhoulys Chacin was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Jonathan
Herrera stepped into the box and reached on an error. Todd Helton extended

June 20, 2010 Twins 4, Phillies 3

Minnesota averts the sweep and get the win in a dramatic way. In the bottom of the 9th with Raul Ibanez (who had doubled) at third base for the Phillies and one out with a 4-3 Twins lead, shortstop Wilson Valdez flies out to left fielder Delmon Young for the second out. While Ibanez isn't the fastest guy in the world, on a 1-12 sac fly chance I decided to go for it to get a tie. A 16 comes up, Ibanez out at home for the final out, game over.

All scoring against the starters, with exactly opposite records but not in the order you might think. Winner - Carl Pavano (8-4), loser - Roy Halladay (4-8)! As we know, former Sox phenom Pavano's main claims to fame are being in the trade in 1997 that bought Pedro to Boston and giving up Mark McGwire's 70th homerun in 1998, Pavano's rookie year with Les Expos. As for the so far big bust Halladay (from the next province to the west), his struggles continue in his new home as he loses his fourth straight start.

The Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Citizen's Bank Park. The final score was the Minnesota Twins
4, the Philadelphia Phillies 3.

Carl Pavano(8-4) had a steady outing. He went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 8
hits and 1 walk. Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.

Pavano was helped out by Alex Burnett who recorded his 2nd save. Roy
Halladay(4-8) was the loser. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 10 hits
and no walks.

'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it
was nothing.' Pavano said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put
the ball where I wanted it.'

June 20, 2010 Dodgers 5, Red Sox 1

Take out the top of the first inning, and the Red Sox have a tight 1-0 victory with Dodger starter Hiroki Kuroda getting a tough luck complete game loss. However, the top of the first was played after all in which LA does all of their damage in pasting Sox starter Clay Buchholz for five runs and the loss pretty much ending the game before the Sox even got to bat. Still a complete game for Kuroda (obviously lol), just a win instead. Old friend Manny Ramirez gets a 4 for 4 day as the Dodgers take two of three games.

June 19, 2010 Phillies 2, Twins 1

Two swings of the bat account for all of the scoring in a pitchers duel between Cole Hamels and Kevin Slowey. A homerun for Justin Morneau in the 2nd inning gives the Twins an early 1-0 lead, and it holds until the 7th when the Phils finally get to Slowey when Wilson Valdez knocks one over the wall after teammate Raul Ibanez singled in front of him for two runs. Jose Contreras and Brad Lidge hold Minnesota scoreless in the 8th and 9th on only 14 pitches to preserve Hamels' team-leadintg 8th win of the season. Slowey goes the distance in the complete game tough luck loss at exactly 100 pitches.

Despite the teams having virtually identical records (Twins 38-30, Phillies 37-29) the Twins hold a 3 1/2 game lead in the AL Central while the Phillies sit in third in the NL East, 4 games behind the New York Mets.

June 19, 2010 Dodgers 6, Red Sox 4 (11)

Hard fought game till the end. The Sox play comeback all game, with three runs in the 6th all courtesy of Kevin Youkilis (2-run triple and run scored) to tie theg ame and it stays tied until the 10th. After LA gets a run in the 10th the Sox get a golden opportunity in the bottom of the 10th for the win with the bases loaded after scoring a run and only one out, but a runner gets thrown out at home for the second out and a grounder ends the inning.

Andre Ethier smokes a 20run homerun off of newcomer Robert Manuel as the Dodgers take a 2-run lead in the 11th and this time hold on. Manuel's first major league decision goes into the loss collumn (he pitched in three games in 2009 with the Reds with no decisions).

June 18, 2010 Phillies 5, Twins 1

All of the runs for the Phillies are scored in the first inning on only two hits with a couple of walks, an error, a hit batter and a wild pitch tossed in for good measure. They end up outhit by Minnesota for the game, but four doubleplays turned by the Phillies (three of those to end an inning and the other scoring the Twins only run) help the cause. The American League Twins, not used to the NL style of baseball and with their starter yanked after that first inning, go through five pitchers and four pinch-hitters for pitchers. They were trailing in the game from the beginning and were trying to get runs, but that still seems kind of high. This is the Twins first trip to Philly since 2002.

Just called up from Pawtucket, Felix Dubront makes his major league debut on the Fenway hill and gets his first (obviously) major league win in a steady performance as the Dodgers travel to the opposite coast and make their first appearance at Fenway Park in six years. This also marks the return to Boston for former Soxer and future Broward County jailbird Manny Ramirez, who is a non-factor.

Just in case you didn't hear about it:

The Phillies hold the Yankees tough until the end as the Yanks get a run in the 7th off of starter Kyle Kendrick and two more in the 8th off of Jose Contreras. Mariano Rivera goes an easy top of the 9th for his AL leading 22nd save. But, the big story today is nothing that I have mentioned so far.

The big story is Phillie reliever Scott Mathieson. For the first time in almost four years Mathieson takes the mound in a major league game after having not one, but two Tommy John surgeries. He had one at the end of his rookie year in 2006 and another one on the same arm late in 2008 while rehabing from the first one. Now, here he is back in the major leagues and taking the mound at Yankee Stadium and holding the Bombers at bay late in a close game. What can be better than that? Well, maybe a Phillie win. :(

did not allow a baserunner in his 1/3 of an inning. New York (AL) finished
with 11 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 8.

Mariano Rivera earned his 22nd save. Jose Contreras(0-3) was given the loss
in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits without retiring a batter.

June 17, 2010 Red Sox 6, Diamondbacks 1

Kevin Youkilis starts it off right with a 3-run homerun in the first inning and a 2-run double in the 8th for Darnell McDonald (after Daniel Nava was walked intentionally to load the bases to get to McDonald) are the big blows as the Sox cruise to the win. Not often that a record-breaking performance happens in the same game in real life, and in SOM.

Mark Reynolds strikes out twice to put him over the 100 strikeout mark already on the season. I did a bit of research, and during the real 2010 seaso he became the fastest player to the 100 strikeout mark when he got strikeout number 100 in the 67th game of the year. What is this game? As you can tell with Arizona's record of 32-35, the 67th game of the year - the same game as Reynolds would get the record IRL!

June 16, 2010 Phillies 4, Yankees 2 (10)

It takes extra frames, but the Phillies come out on top when Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each hit RBI doubles in the top of the 10th. Brad Lidge, who took the mound in the 9th to squelch a Yanks rally attempt in a tie game, gets the win and saves his own win when he takes the bottom of the 10th. No save in the record books though, obviously.

In a good matchup it was the Philadelphia Phillies 4, the New York (AL)
Yankees 2 in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Philadelphia was
victorious in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Chase Utley began
the Philadelphia spurt when he stroked a one-base hit. Ryan Howard came next
and he doubled. Chan Ho Park then threw a wild pitch. One out later, Raul
Ibanez came to the plate and doubled. Ben Francisco came up to bat and was
walked intentionally. Overall Philadelphia out-hit New York (AL) 12 to 7.

Brad Lidge(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Park(1-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 3
hits in 2 innings.

The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 35-28. With the loss, New
York (AL) has a record of 7-3 lately, 43-22 overall.

Given some runs to finally work with, Jon Lester's sloppy start nonetheless goes into the win collumn. Lester was basically out of the game already when he got the win. After Arizona had batted in the top of the 6th I had already decided to have a new pitcher for the top of the 7th, and in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-2 tie Bill Hall slams a nice 3-run pinch-hit homerun of of Blaine Boyer to put the Sox over the hump.

Boyer gets the loss with five runs allowed on only one hit. How can that happen? Four walks, that's how. The free-swinging Snakes strike out 14 times against the Red Sox pitching. Just to show how much Arizona strikes out compared to everyone else, their team total of 639 is almost 60 more than the second highest, and is over 100 more than the highest total in the AL.

June 15, 2010 Yankees 4, Phillies 0

In 1950, the Phillie "Whiz Kids" were swept by the New York Yankees in the World Series, four games to none. By the looks of today's score, their luck isn't any better sixty years later. The defending pennant winners do battle in the interleague play, and C. C. Sabitha ties a career high with 13 strikeouts while Nick Swisher knocks out two homeruns as the Yanks dispatch the Phillies in the shutout. Sabitha's replacement, Boone Logan, strikes out four of his own for a total of 17 strikeouts. That would be the most against the Phillies in a nine inning game in almost 20 years, since 19 Phillies struck out against David Cone on the final day of the season back in 1991.

That 1950 World Series appearance would be the only one for the Phillies in a 65 year stretch between 1915 and 1980, but you probably knew that already.

C.C. Sabathia reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts and Nick Swisher rocketed 2
homeruns and scored 3 times as the New York (AL) Yankees outscored the
Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 0.

It was a good day for New York (AL) thanks to Swisher. He slapped a one-base
hit in the 2nd inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 8th inning. New York (AL) finished
with 9 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 6.

Sabathia(10-2) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Boone
Logan recorded the save, his 1st. Roy Halladay(4-7) took the loss. He gave
up 3 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Sabathia offered, 'The
fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of
course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
