June 4, 2010 White Sox 7, Indians 0

The most agonizing of almost no-hitters that you can have, next to one being broken up with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. John Danks pitches the one-hit shutout over the Indians, and strikes out 13 for good measure, but had no chance at a no-hitter when Jason Donald leads off the game with a single. That would be the only hit allowed by Danks, as a walk is the only other baserunner for the impressive game score of a 97!!

BTW, if you are curious the highest game score in history is a 105 by Kerry Wood of the Cubs against the Astros on May 6, 1998. Wood, as you probably know, tied Roger Clemens' record of 20 strikeouts that game and also pitched a one-hitter with no walks in what was only the fifth start of his career. I was curious, and checking it out the only hit and Astros runner in the game was a single by Ricky Gutierrez leading off the 3rd inning.

June 4, 2010 Padres 6, Phillies 4

Homeruns for both Carlos Ruiz and Shane Victorino in the bottom of the 8th make it interesting, but they can't climb up out of the big hole left by Roy Halladay. Halladay sucks the joint out again, not even getting out of the 4th inning while allowing three homeruns and six runs overall in the loss.

Before today, the Padres were one of three NL teams that the Phillies had not played yet this season (the Dodgers and the Reds are the other two). Cincinnati will be knocked off that list with the first NL series after the interleague play in mid-July, but it will take until August 10th, the 112th game of the year, before the Phillies see the Dodgers the first time.

In a tight game it was the San Diego Padres 6, the Philadelphia Phillies 4 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

In the 2nd inning San Diego went on top for good as they scored 2 runs on 2
base hits. The big moment was provided by Nick Hundley who silenced the
crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. San Diego
finished with 12 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 5.

The victory went to Mat Latos(7-2) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Heath Bell earned the save, his 17th. Roy Halladay(4-5) was the loser.
He served up 3 gopher balls in 4 and 1/3 innings.

June 4, 2010 Red Sox 5, Orioles 2

They were outhit by the Orioles 11-5, but three of the hits for the Red Sox are huge - a 2-run homerun for J. D. Drew, a 2-run triple for Victor Martinez and Jeremy Hermida tosses in a solo homer for the other Sox run. It all gives Clay Buchholz an easy win, not that he needed it. Over the last five starts for Buchholz, including this one, he has been most impressive. One run in 7 innings, one run (unearned) in 8, a shutout, one run in 7 and one run in 6 2/3 today for a 4-0 record and miniscule 0.72 ERA over that stretch.

Almost overlooked is the performance of Orioles reliever Jason Berken, as he holds the Sox hitless over the final 3 2/3 innings of the game but gets basically nothing to show for it.

Baltimore out-hit Boston 11 to 5, but Boston ended up with more runs.

The victory was credited to Clay Buchholz(5-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings,

June 3, 2010 Red Sox 8, A's 1

A Kyle Kuuzmanoff solo homerun in the 2nd inning for Oakland looked to put Tim Wakefield on the hook for a tough luck loss. That is, until the Red Sox explode for 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th off of the A's relief corps to turn it into a laugher. Adrian Beltre gets the big blow with a grand slam homerun. the second slam for the Sox this season. Wake was out of the game by then though, so Hideki Okajima gets credit for the win. Of the 8 runs scored in that 8th inning, six of them were unearned for Oakland - but all but one for the individual pitchers due to two pitching changes and an error. All of it puts a fairly decent performance for A's starter Brett Anderson (6 shutout innings with 7 K) straight down the shitter. The details -

didn't give up much, just 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning. Boston had 13 hits
overall, while Oakland had 7.

Brad Ziegler(1-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3
innings allowing 2 hits and no walks.

June 2, 2010 Phillies 7, Braves 2

Kyle Kendric kwent through the month of May undefeated at 3-0 in five starts, and continues it today as he holds the Braves to two runs in his 6 innings of work. A 3-run shot for Greg Dobbs and a solo homerun for Jayson Werth are the big blows. The loss knocks the Braves out of first place, but unfortunately for the Phils the Mets now sit in first and the Phillies are still in third.

The Philadelphia Phillies cruised to a 7 to 2 victory over the Atlanta Braves
at Turner Field.

Philadelphia had 3 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning. That
scoring would be all that was needed. Philadelphia had a total of 10 hits
for the game.

Kyle Kendrick(5-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing
2 runs. Derek Lowe(4-3) was given the loss. He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.

June 2, 2010 A's 10, Red Sox 7

It looked good when the Red Sox storm out to a 4-0 with a four run third inning, but that is all quickly erased when the A's put the first eight batters on base off of Dice-K and get 7 runs in the inning. The Sox make a bit of noise in the 9th off of a tiring Ben Sheets on Jason Varitek's second homer of the game, but too little too late. Tek knocks home four runs on the two homers, and has 9 round trippers for the season in only 64 atbats for his part time duty.

Since all of the excitement was between the bottom of the 3rd and the top of the 4th, here is what happened:

June 1, 2010 Phillies 3, Braves 0

I knew this one would be a tight one before the game even started with Cole Hamels (6-2, 2.08) and Tim Hudson (7-2, 2.86) opposing each other, and the fans were treated to the expected pitchers duel. The only way to get runs was a bit of daring baseball, and the Phils did just that in the top of the 6th. Shane Victorino led off with a triple, and next batter Wilson Valdez (with his A bunting) lays down a perfect squeeze bunt with Victorino crossing the plate. The Phillies get two more runs in the top of the 9th off of Jonny Venters to ice the game and stop the Braves winning streak at eight. Hamels goes the distance for the shutout.

June 1, 2010 Red Sox 4, Athletics 0

John Lackey finally puts that $82.5 million arm to work, facing one over the minimum in a dominating performance over Oakland. Not too hard to dominate when your opponent walks 8 batters anyway! Lackey retired the first 16 straight until Mark Ellis singled with one out in the 6th for the first A's runner of the game, although it was almost broken up much sooner than that. Kurt Suzuki led off the 4th with a searing double to left, Bill Hall throws the ball to first and Youk steps on the bag - and Suzuki is called out! Apparently he missed first base rounding the bag, so he is out on appeal with Hall getting the putout. That would have loomed very important had things worked out differently in theh it department.

John Lackey didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Boston Red Sox beat
the Oakland Athletics by a score of 4 to 0.

Lackey(4-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Oakland batters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings
seeing his ERA drop from 4.91 to 4.29. The right-handed Lackey had his
no-hit bid broken up by Mark Ellis who singled with one out in the 6th
inning. After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.

Gio Gonzalez(5-3) suffered the loss. 'When Lackey is on like that it is a
tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Bob Geren said. 'He always pitches
well against us.'

end of May standings

So far the Red Sox have been a bit of a dissapointment, currently two games below the .500 mark and 9 1/2 games out of the division lead being four games worst than they were at this time in real life. The Phillies, despite having the fourth best record in the National League and being one game better than IRL, are only in third place in the NL East behind the Mets and the sizzling Braves.

Biggest surprises so far - the Mets and Brewers who both are seven games better than IRL. The biggest dissapointments so far are the Giants and Blue Jays, each seven games worse.
