April 10, 2010 Royals 10, Red Sox 1

I didn't think it could get worse than the embarrasment of last games' 8-1 loss with 6 unearned runs, but oh how wrong I was. Josh Beckett does worse than his 5 run, 4 1/3 inning performance in the opener by getting shelled for 7 runs in the 2nd inning, with six of those unearned! Sloppy defense does it again.

The embarassment of that 2nd inning:
*** BOTTOM OF INNING 2 ***

The Sox fall to 1-4 for the year, with their so far anemic offence only scoring 7 runs total and batting only .206 while allowing almost 7 runs a game. It will get better cause it can't get much worse.

They almost ran out of baseballs at Kauffman Stadium as Kansas City Royals
clobbered the Boston Red Sox pitching staff, scoring 10 runs while Zack
Greinke(2-0), with relief help from Dusty Hughes, held Boston to 1
run.

Greinke earned his pay with a solid performance for Kansas City. He went 6
and 2/3 innings and surrended up 4 hits and 2 walks seeing his ERA drop from
4.70 to 3.14. Kansas City out-hit Boston for the game, 9 hits to 5.

Josh Beckett(0-2) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
giving up 5 hits and 4 walks.

April 9, 2010 Astros 5, Phillies 2

A tight 2-2 game goes south in the bottom of the 8th for the Phillies. A wild Chad Durbin walks two in the 7th and loads the bases but gets out of it, and when he walks the first two batters in the 8th Jose Conteras takes over. Contreras gets an out, but Geoff Blum singles one to right fielder Jayson Werth. With the runners not slowing down, Werth fires toward home but throws over the head of catcher Carlos Ruiz to allow the run to score. Next batter J. R. Towles rips a double, good for two more runs and a 5-3 Houston lead which would be the final.

Looked like a Phillies reunion on the field, but all in Astros uniforms. Ex-Phillies Michael Bourn and Pedro Feliz were in the starting lineup and my former pinch-hitting master Jason Michaels came in as, natrually, a pinch-hitter for the 'Stros with former Phillie Brett Myers hanging out in the bullpen. Myers won't get a start in the series, but a future Phillie gets the start for the Astros next game in the form of Roy Oswalt. Oswalt will of course come to Philly when today's Phillies starter, J. A. Happ, goes to Houston in the July trade.

In a game at Minute Maid Park the Houston Astros got by the Philadelphia
Phillies by the score of 5 to 2.

Houston won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Hunter Pence led off and started the attack as he
drew a walk. Carlos Lee was next and he drew a walk. After an out was
recorded, Geoff Blum stepped in and he slapped a one-base hit, and an error
was also committed. J.R. Towles came up and he doubled. After another out,
Jason Michaels was the next batter, but he struck out. Matt Lindstrom, after
tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 2nd save.

The victory went to Tim Byrdak(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Chad
Durbin(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 1
hit in 1 inning.

April 9, 2010 Royals 8, Red Sox 1

How can you have a game with 9 runs scord, only 5 RBIs and 6 of the runs being unearned? Play a game like this. The Royals score in the 1st on a sac fly for an RBI after a passed ball advances the runner for an unearned run, a doubleplay grounder scores another run for Kansas City in the 4th for no RBI but an earned run, and a 6th inning mess where KC gets 5 unearned runs with 2 errors (one scored a run for no RBI), a balk for Tim Wakefield to score another run with no RBI, and a 3-run homerun for Yuniesky Bettancourt. Natrually, the one Sox run had no RBI when JD Drew grounded into a doubleplay with a run scoring. Menawhile, Royals starter Kyle davies watches all of this behind him and goes the distance.

This game had one of those unearned runs to team but earned to pitcher things. All five of the runs in the 6th were unearned to the team, but Manny Declarmen came into the game during the inning and hit a batter and allowed Bettancourt's homerun. All three runs on the homer were unearned to the team, but two of the runs were earned to Declarmen on the HBP and the homer itself. The othe rrunner on base was charged to Wakefield and goes unearned both to him and the team.

Here is that 6th inning mess:

Kyle Davies allowed Ned Yost to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at
Kauffman Stadium as the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 8 to
1.

Kansas City set the tone of the game in the first inning plating one
baserunner. David Dejesus lined a base-hit. Dejesus was running on the next
pitch and he stole second. Tim Wakefield then threw a high and inside pitch
that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball. Scott Podsednik
followed and he hit a sacrifice fly. Kansas City totaled 8 hits on the
night.

Davies(1-0) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. The losing pitcher
was Wakefield(0-1). He gave up 5 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 2/3 innings.

April 8, 2010 Phillies 12, Nationals 1

The Phils score in bunches with 5 in the 1st inning to knock Nats starter Craig Stammen from the game, 3 more in the 5th and 4 more in a sloppy 9th inning to ice the cake. Shane Victorino knocks in four runs (3 on a first inning homerun), Chase Utley has four hits and Utley and Ryan Howard each score three times. Kyle Kendrick has no problem holding the Nationals to only four hits and only throwing 72 pitches in the complete game effort. The only damage off him was Ryan Zimerman's second homerun of the year in the 7th. Play account follows the boxscore.

With the first series of the year complete, only two undefeated teams are left, each at 3-0, with the losers obviously at 0-3. The Braves sweep the Cubs, and the Dodgers put out the broom over the Pirates. Gonna be a long year in Pittsburgh at this rate, as the scores in the series were 12-1, 11-7 and 10-7! Allowing more than 10 runs in each of the seasons first three games sure as hell ain't a good start to the season.

April 7, 2010 Phillies 8, Nationals 0

The Phillies open it up and run on all cylinders with everyone but Ryan Howard getting in on the action. Not only does Cole Hamels hold the Nats scoreless, he opens the scoring for the Phils with a 2-run single in the 2nd inning. Hamels did tire in the 8th and loaded the bases, and Danys Baez finishes off the combined shutout.

Washington Nationals by the score of 8 to 0 at Nationals Park.

Washington was unable to claim the lead after Philadelphia went ahead in the
top of the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. The early run
support proved sufficient for Cole Hamels(1-0) and Philadelphia. That was
all the run support Hamels required. Philadelphia had 14 hits overall, while
Washington had 5.

Jason Marquis(0-1) was hit with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 9 hits
and 2 walks in 5 innings.

April 7, 2010 Red Sox 1, Yankees 0

The Red Sox get their first lead of the 2010 season 20 innings into it when JD Drew clouts a solo homerun in the 2nd inning. That was all the scoring that was needed, as John Lackey, Ramon Ramirez and Jonathan Papelbon combine on the shutout for the first victory of the young season.

At Fenway Park, the Boston faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's

Pettitte(0-1), by the score of 1 to 0.

Boston scored what proved to be the only run of the contest in the bottom of
the 2nd inning. That was all the runs Lackey needed. New York (AL) tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 1st. Pettitte suffered the loss. He
allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 2/3 innings.

April 6, 2010 Yankees 4, Red Sox 3

The Sox fall to 0-2 with another tough loss to the Yankees. Lots of early scoring for New York is again the difference, with all four runs in the first three innings off of Jon Lester. This time the Sox mount the comeback, getting within one run by the 6th. Mariano Rivera takes the 8th and 9th innings for New York and the Sox get a runner on in the 8th and two runners on in the 9th but nobody can cross the plate and they lose by a run with the tying run stranded at second base.

April 5, 2010 Nationals 7, Phillies 1

Opening the season in our nations capital, the Phillies rip out of the gate with the first three batters reaching base and a run scoring off Nats starter John Lannan. However, the game goes to hell immediately when Ryan Zimmerman smokes a 2-run homer and Adam Kennedy adds a 3-run shot for a 5 run bottom of the 1st against Roy Halladay. Four homers total hit by the Nats off of Halladay, which ties a career high. Halladay does settle down somewhat and manages to go 6 innings, but after the early showing the Phils are shut down the rest of the way by Lannan and Tyler Walker, who gets a very cheap save with three shutout relief innings. The story of the game is pretty much told in the lines for each starter, who both threw about the same number of pitches:

Halladay 6 inns, 10 hits, 7 runs, 7 K with 107 pitches
Lannan 6 inns, 8 hits, one run, 3 walks with 114 pitches

At Nationals Park the Philadelphia Phillies were battered 7 to 1 by the
Washington Nationals.

John Lannan(1-0) had a steady outing. He went 6 innings and surrended up 8
hits and 3 walks. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither
team was able to score again.

Tyler Walker gained credit for his 1st save. Roy Halladay(0-1) was charged
with the loss. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.

April 4, 2010 Yankees 15, Red Sox 1 (Red Sox home opener)

Don't mind the names of Bronx Bombers and Beantowners, stupid me forgot to import the team nicknames before I started! I will be sure to fix that.

Anyway, back to the game. Opening the season in front of the hometown fans, the Sox wanted a good first impression. Looking at the hits, mission accomplished as each team had 12 hits. But, with the hits even and you lose by 14 runs something else has to go wrong. In this case, walks as the Sox pitchers walk 10 Yanks and an 8 run 8th inning for the Bombers sure as hell don't help. Neither did Jorge Posada's 2 homer, 6 RBI day. The only bright spot for the Sox - with two out in the bottom of the 9th, Mike Cameron spoils the shutout bid for C. C. Sabitha by lofting one into the right field seats for his first homerun in a Red Sox uniform.

WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: J.D. Drew robbed Jorge Posada of a Homerun!
Bot 5th: Derek Jeter robbed Victor Martinez of a base hit.

Jorge Posada smacked 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the New York (AL) Bronx
Bombers crushed the Boston Beantowners 15 to 1.

Posada was unconscious all evening. The Boston fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He
launched a three-run homer in the 4th inning, delivered a solo blast in the
7th inning and ripped a one-base hit bringing home two baserunners in the 8th
inning. New York (AL) bats were hot in the 8th inning with 8 runs on 5 hits.
Both teams totaled 12 hits on the night.

The winning pitcher was C.C. Sabathia(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 8 and 2/3
innings. Josh Beckett(0-1) was given the loss. New York (AL) knocked him
around a bit, as he gave up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
