May 4, 2010 Cardinals 5, Phillies 1

Two undefeated pitchers do battle with Cole Hamels (4-0) battling Adam Wainwright (3-0), and both do their jobs. Unfortunately, Wainwright was just a bit better than Hamels as Hamels suffers his first loss of the season. A close 2-1 Cardinal lead was busted open when St. Louis gets three runs off of Danys Baez in the 8th inning to ice the game as the Phillies lose their 5th straight.

Phillies by the score of 5 to 1.

utilizing 2 base hits. St. Louis finished with 13 hits while Philadelphia
ended up with 6.

The victory was credited to Adam Wainwright(4-0) who went 6 innings, allowing
1 run. Wainwright got help from Kyle McClellan who earned his 2nd save. Cole
Hamels(4-1) was the losing pitcher.

Wth the win St. Louis now has a record of 13-14. Philadelphia has a record of
13-13 after the loss.

May 4, 2010 Red Sox 4, Angels 2

Jon Lester seems to have put his early season struggles behind him. In his first three starts, he went 0-3 with a 6.62 ERA. In the three starts since, he is 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA, with a shutout two starts ago and an almost shutout today. Lester goes into the 9th with a 4-0 lead, but after getting one out and allowing a hit I go to the bullpen and give Scott Schoeneweis some action with the four run lead. That lead quickly evaporates in half when Hideki Matsui greets Schoeneweis with a 2-run homer over the fence. Next batter Juan Rivera singles, so in comes Paps who entices a doubleplay grounder off the bat of Howie Kendrick to end the game and gets his second save in as many days.

With the win, it puts the Sox over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Catcher Victor Martinez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Jon Lester whiffed 10
batters as the Boston Red Sox topped the Los Angeles(AL) Angels by a score of
4 to 2 at Fenway Park.

Lester(3-3) gave Boston a solid outing. He allowed only 6 hits and 1 walk in
8 and 1/3 innings dropping his ERA from 4.28 to 3.64. Los Angeles(AL) made
it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 3rd save. Ervin Santana(2-2) suffered the
loss. Lester was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun
out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got
the victory and I'll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!'

The St. Louis Cardinals, over the last four days, have played he equivalent of six games in the period with three extra inning games (21, 13 and 11 innings) during that time and they looked pretty pooped against a fresh off the disabled list Joe Blanton. Blanton is in control of the tired Cards through the first six, helping with his bat with a 2nd inning RBI single which combines with a Placido Polanco bases loaded walk to give the Phils the 2-0 lead. In the 7th, the Cardinals come alive when Colby Rasmus belts a 2-run homer off of Blanton to tie the game. The Phils fall apart in the 8th as three singles, a walk and two errors let four unearned runs score for St. Louis and spell doom for the Phils as they lose their fourth straight. A nice 3 for 4 day for Carlos Ruiz highlights a losing cause.

May 3, 2010 Red Sox 10, Angels 8

Your classic slugfest featuring 18 runs and 27 hits, 15 of those hits for extra bases. Both starters in the game, Clay Buchholz for the Sox and Joe Saunders for the Angels are shelled, but Tim wakefield comes through strong in relief for the Sox and stops the bleeding by retiring the first 12 batters to face him. Meanwhile, the offense goes to work scoring six unanswered runs turning a 7-4 Angels lead after 3 1/2 to a 10-7 Sox lead after 7. Wake finally allows his first runner in the 8th inning, at which point Jonathan Papelbon takes over and finally gets that long awaited second save of the year. JD Drew gets three hits, falling a triple shy of the cycle.

The win puts the Sox to the .500 mark for the first time this season, continuing a 9-2 run while putting their 4-11 start to the season long behind them.

May 2, 2010 Mets 3, Phillies 1

The battle of the lefties, Jamie Moyer and Johan Santana, unfortunately for the Phillies go the way of the Mets' Santana as he goes 8 innings allowing only three hits and a single run. Not that Moyer pitched bad, four hits and two runs in 6, but Santana was just a bit better as he stymies the big Phillie lefty bats and improves to 4-0.

Despite pitching well and not allowing any more than four runs in any of the three games, the Phils get swept by the Mets by scores of 4-1, 4-2 and 3-1 as their potent offense gets silenced in the series. Francisco Rodriguez gets saves in all three games for New York.

May 2, 2010 Red Sox 7, Orioles 3

Orioles starter Kevin Millwood, 3-1 for the season so far and 4-16 for the real season, was gunning to tie real-life win total and was in control through the first six innings with a 3-0 lead. After Jonathan Van Every hits his first homer of the year to put the Sox on the board, Millwood exits and the Oriole relievers bleed like a sieve as the Sox go to work with six more unanswered runs off of Millwood's replacements in the 7th and 8th innings. It all takes Josh Beckett off the hook for a loss and give him his second win of the year as they climb within a game of the .500 mark.

Dustin Pedroia had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox topped the
Baltimore Orioles by a score of 7 to 3 at Camden Yards.

Boston scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits.
The highlight belonged to Mike Lowell who deflated the spirits of the home
town crowd when he smacked a three-run homer. Overall Boston out-hit
Baltimore 14 to 10.

The win was credited to Josh Beckett(2-3) who went 6 innings allowing 3 runs.
Alfredo Simon(0-3) ended up with the loss in relief.

Boston continued their winnings ways improving their record to 12-13. They
are 8-2 in their last ten games. Baltimore has a record of 10-15, worst in
the division after the loss.

May 1, 2010 Mets 4, Phillies 2

Sometimes, one pitch makes all the difference as the long ball does in the Phillies again. Roy Halladay sails through the first five innings, even contributing with his bat with a sacrafice fly for the firs trun of a 2-run Philly 2nd inning. In the 6th, Halladay loads the bases via singles for Alex Cora and Jason Bay and a walk to Ike Davis with two outs sandwiched in. Halladay throws a mistake pitch to Jeff Francoeur, who deposits the ball into the outfield seats for a grand slam homerun and all four Met runs on one pitch. Three Mets relievers hold the Phils hitless over the final three innings, and the so far disappointing Halladay drops to 1-4 on the year.

So this is what over $15 million gets, absolutely nothing to this point!

In a tight game it was the New York (NL) Mets 4, the Philadelphia Phillies 2
at Citizen's Bank Park.

New York (NL) came up with all the runs they needed in the 6th inning scoring
4 runners on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Jeff Francoeur who
silenced Citizen's Bank Park as he launched a Grand Slam homerun. New York
(NL) rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Mike Pelfrey(3-1) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Francisco
Rodriguez recorded the save, his 11th. Roy Halladay(1-4) was the loser.
With this win, New York (NL) has a 17-7 record. They have been 7-3 lately.
Philadelphia has a record of 13-10 after the loss.

May 1, 2010 Red Sox 2, Orioles 1 (11)

A hard-fought win in Baltimore features Daisuke Matsuzaka's first start after coming off the DL, and Dice-K lives up to the "K" striking out 9 Orioles in 7 innings while only allowing two hits. He enters the 8th with a tight 1-0 lead, but after getting the first out Rhyne Hughes walks and a Nolan Reimold single sends Hughes to third. Dick-K gives way to Jonathan Papelbon, but Paps gets his 4th blown save in 5 chances so far when Cesar Izturis executes a perfect squeeze bunt to get Hughes across the plate with the tying run.

The Sox score the winnning run in the top of the 11th when, after an out, JD Drew singles and a David Ortiz double sends Drew to third. Adrian Beltre is intentionally walked to set up a possible DP, and Darnell McDonald keeps the ball off the ground with a sac fly to center as Drew scores. Manny Declarmen gets the win, and takes the bottom of the 11th also.

April 30, 2010 Mets 4, Phillies 1

First, I was wrong in the blog of the 21 inning Braves-Cardinals game that the Braves were the Phillies next opponent. I meant to say the Cardinals were, but obviously that would had been wrong also since this game was against the Mets. The Mets, Cardinals and Braves do all play the Phillies in the current homestand in that order. Oops.

Anyway, as for the game if it was not for Ike Davis, the Phils would have won the game 1-0! Davis singlehandedly wins the game for New York, acounting for all four Met RBIs with two homeruns - dual two-run shots with one in the 4th ining and one in the 8th, both off of Kyle Kendrick. Not that Kendrick pitched particularly bad, as he did go into the 8th inning, but two mistake pitches is all it takes. The Phils finally get a run off of a tiring Jonathan Niese in the bottom of the 8th on a Carlos Ruiz double and Shane Victorino RBI single. Niese does strike out 10 Phils in the winning effort.

The Phils finish the first month of the year at 13-9, four games behind the division-leading Braves.

First baseman Ike Davis knocked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Jonathon Niese
reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 4 to 1 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Davis provided the offensive punch. He blasted a solo shot in the 4th inning
and popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 8th inning. New York (NL)
banged out 7 hits on the night.

The win went to Niese(2-2) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings. Francisco
Rodriguez recorded his 10th save. Kyle Kendrick(1-2) was tagged with the
loss.

Niese didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had
10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent
total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good,
isn't it?'
