April 21, 2010 Rangers 14, Red Sox 7

I can only come up with two words to describe the performance of the Boston Red Sox in my 2010 season so far - utterly embarassing. No matter who has taken the mound, starting or relieving, they have been thrown to the wolves. Today was Josh Beckett's turn. He sails through the first three innings, but totally implodes in the 4th as you can see:

*** TOP OF INNING 4 ***
0 J.Hamilton 4-10 11 3 Single b-1
0 1 V.Guerrero 6- 7 3 Single 1-2 b-1
0 12 N.Cruz 2- 8 6 Walk 2-3 1-2 b-1
0 123 C.Davis 4- 8 5 Double 3-H 2-H 1-3 b-2
0 23 M.Treanor 2- 5 5 Strike Out b-0
1 23 J.Arias 0 Int Walk b-1
1 123 J.Borbon 4- 6 4 Single 3-H 2-H 1-3 b-2
1 23 E.Andrus 4- 7 2 Sac Fly 3-H b-0
2 2 M.Young 4- 8 1 3 Double 2-H b-2
SUBSTITUTE P - Ramon Ramirez
2 2 J.Hamilton 5- 2 2 Ground Out b-0

The Rangers up the lead to 10-1 before the Sox get going in the bottom of the 8th with a 5 run inning on a Youk 2-run shot, a Bill Hall 2-run triple and one of Darnell McDonald's three hits on the day, an RBI single to close the gap to four runs. So, I decide to give the struggling Jonathan Papelbon a bit of action in a non-save situation and let him take the top of the 9th. He proceeds to suck the joint out again, as after Texas gets a single and two outs he walks three straight batters allowing a run to score. Manny Declarmen takes over and does no better, with a bases-clearing double for Josh Hamilton (all runs charged to Paps) and two walks of his own. The Sox get a run in the 9th and load the bases, but David Ortiz strikes out for the final out. One of the wildest SOM games I have had with 20 walks (yes, 20!!) between the two teams, 12 of those for the Sox pitchers. The AL record is 30, the NL record is 26 for most walks by both teams in one game.

Left fielder Josh Hamilton had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Texas Rangers
defeated the Boston Red Sox 14 to 7 at Fenway Park.

Matt Harrison(3-0) was solid if not spectacular. He went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 6 hits and 5 walks and allowed 2 gopher balls. Texas had 13 hits
for the game and Boston had 10.

Josh Beckett(0-3) took the loss. He was knocked around by Texas, allowing 6
hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Texas now has a record of 9-5. With
this loss, Boston has a 3-7 record of late, 4-11, worst in the division
overall.
