| It looked like the Sox would get back on the winning track after an RBI double for Dustin Pedroia and a 2-run homer for Kevin Youkilis in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Twins even came to bat, but it was not to be. With a 4-1 lead in the 7th, Tim Wakefield begins to tire a bit after getting the first two outs easily and Hideki Okajima provides no relief, almost getting a tie but the tying run was thrown out at home by Jeremy Hermida to end the 7th. The 8th inning is a disaster, as Okajima and Scott Schoenweis enable the Twins to tie the game 4-4. I bring in Jonathan Papelbon to try to stop the bleeding, but he fares no better than yesterday's blown save allowing a 2-run single to Nick Punto to give the Twins the margin of victory and a series sweep. The loss drops the Sox into a tie with the teams of 1931, 1932, 1958, 1966 and 1996 (also 2011) for the second worst start in team history at 2-7. The worst belongs to the 1-8 teams of 1925, 1927 and 1945. There have been six Sox teams (and also the 2011 team) who have started at 2-8 which is the worst 10 game start in team history. Hopefully the Sox can win next game to avoid the distinction of joining them. Nick Punto had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Minnesota Twins beat the Boston
Red Sox by a score of 6 to 4.
Minnesota came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
scoring 3 runs on 5 base hits. Joe Mauer led off and started the attack as
he doubled. Justin Morneau stepped into the batter's box and he lined a
single. After an out was recorded, Jim Thome came to the plate and banged
out a single. Jason Kubel followed and he smacked a single to load the
bases. J.J. Hardy was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Punto did
his part to keep things going and lined a one-base hit. Minnesota had 12
hits overall, while Boston had 7.
The win was credited to Ron Mahay(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing no
runs. Scott Schoeneweis(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He
surrendered 2 runs and 3 hits in 1/3 of an inning.
