run support

After mentioning about run support (or lack thereof) during the past couple of games, that got me curious as to how the starters of the Red Sox and Phillies look in that department. In the case of Tim Wakefield, his starter statistics will be listed.

RED SOX

6.17 - Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.93 ERA, 4-1 record, 6 starts)
5.90 - Clay Buchholz (3.05, 4-2, 10 starts)
5.25 - Josh Beckett (5.98, 2-5, 8)
4.71 - Tim Wakefield (5.31, 1-3, 7)
4.70 - John Lackey (4.91, 3-2, 10)
3.18 - Jon Lester (3.19, 3-7, 11)

Team average runs per game - 4.87

PHILLIES

5.60 - Kyle Kendrick (4.83, 4-2, 10)
5.60 - Cole Hamels (2.08, 6-2, 10)
4.90 - Jamie Moyer (4.12, 2-4, 10)
4.45 - Roy Halladay (4.35, 4-4, 11)
3.60 - Joe Blanton (1.56, 2-0, 5 for now)

Nelson Figueroa had one spot start and got 6 runs of support.
J. A. Happ started two games before being injured at 6.00 support. He will get one more start before being part of the trade for Roy Oswalt.

Team average per game - 5.02

Just goes to prove that you can pitch as great as you want, but if your teammates don't score any runs behind you it won't do you any good in the won-loss department. Just look at Jon Lester and his 3-7 record despite a 3.19 ERA. Even more unbelievable, Lester in his last 5 starts has a 2.68 ERA with an 0-4 record, and his no-decision was a game when he pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings!!
