| The Phillies can only manage three hits for the game while the Cubs get 8, but Philly gets all the runs they need in the 2nd inning on a Ross Gload RBI single and a run coming home on a double play grounder for no RBI for Paul Hoover. Joe Blanton, David Herndon and Jose Contreras combine on the shutout. Contreras has taken his current role of stopper with both Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson on the shelf in stride with his third save in the last five days. |

Joe Blanton(2-0) and Ryan Dempster(3-5) treated the Philadelphia fans to a
fine pitching duel at Citizen's Bank Park. The Philadelphia Phillies
eventually emerged as victors over the Chicago (NL) Cubs by the score of 2 to
0.
Philadelphia tallied 2 runs in the 2nd inning. Jimmy Rollins led off and got
things going when he drew a walk. Raul Ibanez stepped into the batter's box
and he laced a base-knock. Ibanez stole second with some aggressive base
running. Ross Gload came up and he stroked a single. Paul Hoover came up to
bat and grounded into a double play. That early run support was enough for
Blanton and Philadelphia. Neither team managed to score after the 2nd
inning.
Jose Contreras earned his 5th save. 'He gutted it out' Charlie Manuel said of
Blanton. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
