May 18, 2010 Phillies 2, Pirates 1

While the Mets and Braves have been battling out first place in the division most of the season so far, the Phillies have been sitting quietly back in third place. Due to the Phillies recent hot streak (10-2 last 12 games) they have now snuck within a game of first place as the Mets, Braves and Phillies have the second, third and fourth best records in the National League respectively.

As for the game itself, a sac fly for Ryan Howard in the bottom of the 8th breaks a 1-1 tie for the victory.

WEB GEMS- Top 6th: Carlos Ruiz blocked the plate, saving a run!

One run was the difference at Citizen's Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2 to 1.

Philadelphia scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Placido
Polanco stroked a one-base hit. Jimmy Rollins stepped into the batter's box
and he doubled. Ryan Howard then hit a deep fly. Jayson Werth got his turn
next, but he was a strikeout victim. Ben Francisco came to the plate and was
walked intentionally. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.

The winning pitcher was David Herndon(2-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Herndon got help from Jose Contreras who was credited with his 4th save.
Evan Meek(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' John Russell said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'
