May 17, 2010 Phillies 8, Pirates 7

At one time, the Phillies and Pirates had one of the most heated rivalries in baseball - being from the same state, the same division, perennial contenders. With the advent of realignment back in 1994 that created the NL Central and placed the Pirates in that division, that slowed the rivalry a bit and since 2000 the two teams have never played each other more than six times in one season (home and home series for each team). Today's game brought back some of that old time rivalry.

A 4 for 5 (triple shy of cycle), 2 HR, 3 RBI and 3 run scored day for Pirate leadoff man Delwyn Young set the tone for them when he led off the game with a homerun, but that would be the only time the Phillies trailed. They get two back in their half of the first inning when Jimmy Rollins, back off the DL, goes to the plate for the first time in over a month and rips one over the wall for his first homerun of the year. The Phils never trail again, although Pittsburgh did make a game of it.

Carlos Ruiz had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8 to 7 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Kyle Kendrick(3-2) pitched just well enough, barely, to win. He gave up 5
runs, 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Chad Durbin gained credit for his 2nd save. Charlie Morton(2-4) suffered the
loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 4 innings of work.

John Russell was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
