| New York gets all of the runs they need with a 3 run outburst in the 2nd inning of of Jon Lester and Mariano Rivera takes the 9th for the third time in the series as the hated Yankees complete the sweep of the Red Sox - at Fenway Park, no less. Some solace today for Lester though, despite the loss. With his 11 strikeouts today and his third straight game with double digits in whiffs, the 61 K for the season now ties him for the major league lead in strikeouts with Colorado Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. |

Brett Gardner collected 2 extra-base hits as the New York (AL) Yankees beat
the Boston Red Sox by a score of 3 to 2.
Boston lost it in the 2nd inning when New York (AL) did all their damage
plating 3 runs utilizing 5 base hits. Robinson Cano led off and he banged
out a single. After another out, Marcus Thames got his turn next, but he was
a strikeout victim. Jon Lester then let loose a wild pitch. Francisco
Cervelli followed next and he lined a single. Lester then uncorked a wild
pitch. Gardner added his contribution to the rally and tripled. Derek Jeter
stepped up to the plate and he laced a single. Nick Swisher then stroked a
base-hit. Mark Teixeira was the next batter, but he struck out. That was
all A.J. Burnett(4-2) needed. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to
score.
Burnett got help from Mariano Rivera who was credited with his 10th save.
Lester(3-4) was the losing pitcher. Although losing the contest, he whiffed
11 batters in 7 innings.
