| Ervin Santana holds the Oakland A's hitless for the first no-hitter in the American League this year and the second in the majors as Santana joins Josh Johnson of the Marlins in the no-no club, exactly one month after Johnson's no-hitter on April 15th against the Reds. Four walks kept Santana from perfection. A bit of added info: This will be the 7th solo no-hitter in Angels history and the first one in over 25 years, since Mike Witt tossed a perfect game against the Texas Rangers on the final day of the 1984 season. The last solo no-hitter against the A's was by Nolan Ryan of the Rangers on June 11, 1990. Speaking of Nolan Ryan he owns four of those seven Angel no-hitters, throwing his first one exactly 37 years ago on this date back on May 15th of 1973. I say solo no-hitter because there have been combined no-hitters for the Angels and against the A's more recently than previously mentioned. Mark Langston went the first seven and previous perfect game man Witt took the final two innings as they combined for the Angels to no-hit Seattle in 1990 and four Oriole pitchers combined to no-hit Oakland in 1991. This isn't the first time a no-hitter has involved the Angels and Athletics. Clyde Wright tossed a no-no against the A's for teh first Angels no-hitter back in 1970. Four Oakland pitchers combined to no-hit the Angels on the final day of the 1975 season, which was the only other no-hitter besides Witt's perfect game in 1984 to be on the final day of the season. |

History was made in Los Angeles(AL) as Ervin Santana(4-2) tossed a no-hitter
and the Los Angeles(AL) Angels defeated the struggling Oakland Athletics by
the score of 1 to 0.
Santana was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Oakland batters
down like so many dominoes. He walked 4 Oakland batters. The tension was
mounting with every inning after the 6th. Santana appeared oblivious himself
to the mounting history until two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he
allow himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound. Los
Angeles(AL) managed 7 hits in their victory.
Craig Breslow(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. 'Santana pitched one
heck of a game!' Mike Scioscia said. 'He didn't get away with any bad
pitches because he just didn't throw any bad pitches. What a performance!'
