| Three players seemed to eat a full bowl of Wheaties for breakfast - Jason Varitek, Miguel Cabrera (spiked Wheaties in his case) and John Lackey. Tek rips a grand slam as part of a 6 run 3rd inning which knocks Tigers starter Armando Galarraga from the game, the lush Cabrera accounts for all five Tiger runs with two homeruns off of Lackey, and as for Lackey despite the subpar start gets his first win since his first start of the season and comes close to tying a record. Lackey struck out the side in both the first and second innings for six straight strikeouts to begin he game, two off the major league record and one shy of the AL record. The AL record is the first seven batters done by the immortal Joe Cowley for the White Sox against the Rangers on May 28, 1986, while the major league record is by another recognizable name from the 1980s, Jim Deshaies, who struck out the first eight Dodgers while pitching for Houston on September 23, 1986. I say the immortal Joe Cowley because as I am sure you remember he had possibly the worst no-hitter in history when he walked seven batters and allowed a run against the Angels on September 19 of 1986, almost four months after he set the seven straight at beginning of game strikeout record mentioned above. Four days after Cowley's no-hitter, Deshaies broke the record with eight straight strikeouts to begin the game. Two days later on the 25th, Mike Scott pitched a no-hitter to clinch the division for the Astros to cap off a very interesting week of baseball. |
