June 6, 2010 Phillies 3, Padres 0

The tandem of Joe Blanton, Jose Contreras and Brad Lidge hold the Padres to two hits, while a 3-run smash for Raul Ibanez accounts for all the runs the Phils need.

For lack of anything interesting regarding the game itself, here is some stuff to chew on. The Padres today are notable for having four players in the game who are sons of former major leagers. Centerfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. is of course the son of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, who spent 20 years in San Diego, and the nephew of Chris Gwynn (Tony Sr.'s brother) who played 10 years in the majors from 1987-1996. Pinch-hitter Wil Venable is the son of Max Venable who played for four teams from 1979-1991. Right fielder Scott and shortstop Jerry Hairston Jr. are both the sons of Jerry Hairston, who had a 14 year career with the White Sox in the 1970s and 80s. To add to it, Jerry Sr. is also the son of major leaguer Sammy Hairston, who in 1951 became the first black player in White Sox history. Not done yet, Sammy's son Johnny (who would be the brother to Jerry Sr. and the uncle to Jerry Jr. and Scott) was also a major leaguer, playing for the 1969 Cubs, for the grandfather-father-uncle-son-son combo.

What you might now know (at least I didn't until now) is that Phillie Jayson Werth is also a third generation major leaguer, although not direct grandfather-father-son like the Hairstons. Werth is the nephew of Dick Schofield, who played 14 years in the majors from 1983 to 1996 (mainly with the Angels), and Dick is the son of Ducky Schofield (who would be Werth's grandfather) who had a 19 year career with seven different teams from 1953-1971. Maybe we should play Family Feud instead of a baseball game!!
