| Don't let the score fool you. The Red Sox are in control throughout, as five batters into the game it spelled the end of Jeremy Guthrie's day. Two walks, a double and a grand slam homerun for Victor Martinez (starting at first base today) knocks Guthrie out after only 1/3 of an inning and a 4-0 Sox lead. Bill Hall adds a two-run homerun of his own in the 4th, which would loom to be very important in the end. Jon Lester, finally blessed with some runs to work with, sails through the first 8 innings unscored upon. I left him in for the 9th to try for the shutout, but Baltimore comes alive. A brief summary - the Orioles score two, bases loaded, one out. A flyout for out number two, and then two consective singles score two more runs. Then, a shot to right field by Corey Patterson scores another run. The runner on second, Craig Tatum, doesn't slow at all rounding third and heads for home to tie the game, and the throw from JD Drew is right on the mark with Jason Varitek making the catch a split second before Tatum gets there. The inevitable collision, with Tek emerging with the ball still in his hand as Tatum is declared out for the third out. Jonathan Papelbon gets the easiest save you will ever see, despite not retiring a batter on his own. Two singles allow two runs to score with the potential third run tagged out at home. WEB GEMS- Bot 9th: Jason Varitek blocked the plate, saving a run!
Designated hitter David Ortiz had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox defeated
the Baltimore Orioles 6 to 5 at Camden Yards.
Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 4
runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Victor Martinez who deflated the
crowd as he blasted a Grand Slam homerun. Baltimore threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.
The winning pitcher was Jon Lester(4-7) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings. Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 10th save. Jeremy
Guthrie(3-7) ended up with the loss. By giving up 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning
his ERA increased from 4.96 to 5.45.
'It was a tough one to lose' said Buck Showalter 'We'll get them next time
out.'
