| The battle of Pennsylvania today goes to the hometown Pirates, despite Pittsburgh making five errors. Lastings Milledge plays hero, with a grand slam homerun in the 1st inning, an RBI single in the 5th and a walk-off single in the 9th for 6 RBI on the day. That Milledge slam in the first for Pittsburgh was their only hit of the inning, two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. That first inning line of 4 runs on one hit looked some strange. Right fielder Lastings Milledge smacked a grand slam as the Pittsburgh Pirates
won at PNC Park in dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Phillies, the final
score, 8 to 7.
The deciding run was scored by Pittsburgh in the bottom of the 9th. Pedro
Alvarez doubled. After an out was recorded, Garrett Jones came up and he was
walked intentionally. Milledge then laced a one-base hit resulting in an
exciting win for Pittsburgh and a raucous post-game celebration by the home
town fans. Pittsburgh won despite being out-hit by Philadelphia 10 hits to
7.
Evan Meek(2-1) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jose
Contreras(1-4) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 2 walks
in 1 inning.
